Peer-to-peer sharing service for winter sport equipment



Jako is imaginary startup preparing to launch a mobile app for sharing economy. They want help to design an intuitive, easy-to-use application that allows users to rent out and book winter sport equipment. This is a capstone project completed through Designlab’s UX Academy in October 2018.

Research methods



Qualitative interviews with 5 people: 3 potential lenders and 2 potential borrowers

Competitors analysis

Airbnb (places to stay and things to do around the world), Fat Llama (marketplace for mostly electronics), Task Rabbit (get things done around the home), Spinlister (outdoor sporting gear)


Sharing economy is here to stay. Companies like Airbnb and eBay proved that it is possible to make money by sharing what we own.

Consumers are excited to participate in sharing economy as it offers lower price for the same performance and wide range of choices. They also become more aware of their environmental footprint and impact of their consumption. Attitude towards ownership and personal possessions is shifting, especially among young people.

Jako wants to take advantage of this shift by offering less expensive and more flexible alternative to owning winter sport equipment. Essentially this project is about designing for trust and safety as Jako connects strangers to each other.

How to build trust in digital environment?

by Design

By using Material Design, we help the user feel at home in the app. Following Google platform conventions, we bring familiarity to design that contributes to feeling safe and secure. The app has minimalistic design that does not contain irrelevant information.


ID Verification

We ask all users to go through verification process that includes registering email, connecting phone number and social media account as well as making selfie with ID.


Community reviews

All users are encouraged to fill their personal profiles and leave reviews. Similar to Airbnb, all reviews are blind, meaning that the other party cannot see what was written until they write their own review.

Secure payments and messaging


Messaging platform is in-built into Jako app to keep all conversations in one place and to be able to come back to it in case anything happens. All payments should be made through the app. To keep the customer safe, we are taking security seriously and using state-of-the-art payment approaches.


Commitment to users privacy

It is important to be honest and clear in explanations regarding private data policies. IDs are not shared with other users under no circumstances

Next steps and reflections

Sharing economy and designing for trust is an interest of mine and this project was a great opportunity to go deeper into it. I feel I succeeded in conceptualizing such a service.

For the sake of this case study I decided to create this product as for a startup but I think it could fit in regular companies, like sports shops, community centers and why not local post office.

User testing underlined once again the importance of privacy as the users are sharing their IDs with the company. Clear policies and open communication regarding what would be done with information is essential to build trust towards Jako.
